AI and the challenge of speculative Ethics (ESR14)

As the last few decades have revealed a multitude of challenges brought on by the digital transformation of society, many concerns are expressed about the uncertainty of where current development effort of AI might lead us. There seems to be a shared consensus that AI on one hand offers great potential to solve a variety of blurrily defined challenges for humankind, while “AI taken to the extreme” on the other hand holds dangers and threats. This research project engages with different current modern socio-technical imaginaries of AI, which pull into opposite directions and lay open which contrasting moral commitments are encoded in the utopian and dystopian imaginaries tied to the development of AI.
