Prof D.E. (Douwe) Atsma is a cardiologist whose speciality and areas of interest are interventional cardiology, cell therapy and cardiogenetics and eHealth. He is professor of cardiology at LUMC, professor of eHealth at TU Delft, CMIO digital care applications and eHealth LUMC and board member of the National eHealth Living Lab and board member of Association Physician and Lifestyle.
In 1996, he obtained his PhD on the topic Mechanism of cardiac cell death during ischaemia. This research investigated the basic biochemical mechanism responsible for the death of myocardial cells during myocardial infarction.
In 2001, he completed training as a cardiologist at Leiden University Medical Centre and has been working as an interventional cardiologist since then. He directs the cell therapy programme for patients with chronic heart disease at LUMC, with more than 350 patients now treated. This is the largest single centre patient group worldwide. He is founder of the Cardiogenetics outpatient clinic at LUMC in 2002. Also founder of the Lifestyle Clinic at LUMC in 2018. He coordinates the development of remote digital care for LUMC using The Box, artificial intelligence (AI) and the Medical Service Centre.
